Week 4

I found the process of 3d scanning the object interesting and surprisingly simple. the fact that one has to take images from all angles makes sense, though it is clear the app has difficulty with judging the height of the object if the angle is slightly off. The app was also very annoying with its demand for me to buy the premium version and it spammed me with offers for a discount. It should be noted that this is not the first time I have scanned 3d objects. In high school I was fortunate to have access to a 3d printer in my robotics class and we used it quite often for our projects. As for the value of 3d scanning artefacts the first thing is that I would never use this app as in order to 3d scan something properly one needs specific hardware and software many of which is far better at it than Qlone. That said I do think there is value in 3d scanning artefacts as it allows for the upload of the model online allowing for people to more accurately imagine what the object looks like than if it were just a picture. there are of course other concerns such as the saftey of the artefact during the scanning process as well as copyright issues (you would be surprised at what is copyrighted) and cultural issues (some objects may be culturally inappropriate or unacceptable to scan). That said I do think that 3d scanning artifacts is a useful means of increasing access to an artefact.
