W3 – A Journey of Purification

Hey everyone!

I’ve attached a link to the Dundoc game that I had been mulling on this week. The process of creation was relatively straightforward but the movement into actual gameplay was what stumped me the most. Translating ideas of storytelling into actions that can be felt and done versus simply narrating events was a new experience for me. Anyways, the angle of approach I would take towards the game itself would lean into a Survival-Horror genre set in the late 16th century. You would play as a French-born Catholic residing in a recently converted Protestant England who has decided to flee to their home city of Marseille in search of refuge from this newly emerging religious group that has decided to no longer tolerate your religious presence. As you progress along the pilgrimage, the game would take a darker turn in which the figures the player is fleeing from have turned into more monstrous/demonic entities that reflect the Early Modern religion of the time. The game would conclude with an interesting twist, in which the pilgrimage has been a metaphor for death and coping with dying from the perspective of the Early Modern laity, as the main character has been conducting this journey in Purgatory, rather than the material world, the entire time.

Ideally, the game would incorporate some interesting historical facts regarding ideas of religion, purity, sinfulness, etc. of the Early Modern Period while evidencing how deeply entrenched religion was to the people living during the time. It would incorporate ideas of medicine, astrology, and astronomy as well. In addition, it could shed some interesting light on general historical landmarks through a ‘journal’ that details the sights of the main character as the player stumbles across them. Just an initial thought though!

Have a great week everyone!
