The Archivio Apostolico Vaticano (Vatican Apostolic Archives) will prove vital for undertaking primary source research. Located in Vatican City, the archive is predominantly restricted to in-person viewing. While this itself is a strong hindrance, I am still able to access some primary sources digitally. In addition, I have already begun the process of inquiring for online scans. Should this prove inviable, I have also located a number of other archives that should be equally useful! Unfortunately, they all share the common problem of being located in an entirely different country… This is where befriending an overseas archivist could come in handy. It is difficult to imagine making friends exclusively over email, but perhaps it can be like a pen-pal. I think the obvious first steps is a mutual sign of respect and recognition of the labour an archivist provides. Perhaps this can take the form of an acknowledgement in a paper, or a gift if being physically present is a possibility. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
While doing research there is a pseudo-inevitability that violence will enter the archive. My particular research topic is not inherently tied to trauma to the same extent as others, but it will still surely appear. Regardless of prevalence, I think the best approach to encountering violence is a simultaneous embracing of its presence and recognition of personal limits. Perhaps this can be balanced by taking breaks from research to step away from difficult documents. This would build a resiliency while ensuring compassion remained a primary focus during research. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
