These notes, from the mid\u20111970s, are for an early version of what was at the time chapter 3 of <\/em>The Secular Scripture, or perhaps the third of the Norton Lectures.\u00a0 Most <\/em>of the entries, however, relate to points developed in chapters 2 and 4 of that book.\u00a0 Page numbers in square brackets call attention to the fuller treatment in <\/em>\u201cThe Secular Scripture\u201d and Other Writings on Critical Theory, 1976\u20131991, ed. Joseph Adamson and Jean Wilson. CW 18 (<\/em>Toronto<\/em>: <\/em>University<\/em> of <\/em>Toronto<\/em> Press, 2006). <\/em> The typescript is in the 1991 accession, <\/em>box<\/em> 28<\/em>, file 4.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/em><\/p>\n This brief set of notes does not introduce new material, but it does provide some clues about the process of revision Frye went through in preparing his Norton Lectures, either for delivery or for publication. \u00a0As he instructs himself to \u201cExpand pp. 13\u201314,\u201d it is clear he is working with a manuscript before him.<\/em><\/p>\n <\/em><\/p>\n Down and up movement characteristic of romance.\u00a0 Contrast with realism, which tries for a straight line, yet insensibly modulates into the ironic mode in which the hero is placed above the action. Compromise in most 19th c. fiction, where there\u2019s usually some kind of plunge at the beginning and bounce up at the end.
