Anatomy of Criticism Fifty Years After"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/fp-logo2.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/fp-logo2.png\" alt=\"fp-logo\" width=\"291\" height=\"233\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Bob Denham&#8217;s talk to the Frye Festival in April 2007 has been added  to the Festival Archive in the journal.\u00a0 It can be linked directly <a href=\"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/%E2%80%9Cpity-the-northrop-frye-scholar%E2%80%9D-anatomy-of-criticism-fifty-years-after\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A sample:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In his foreword to the reissue of the <em>Anatomy<\/em> in  2000 Harold  Bloom remarks that he is \u201cnot so fond of the <em>Anatomy<\/em> now\u201d as he  was when he reviewed it forty\u2011three years earlier (vii).\u00a0  Bloom\u2019s  ambivalence springs from his conviction that there is no place  in Frye\u2019s  myth of concern for a theory of the anxiety of influence,  Frye\u2019s view  of influence being a matter of \u201ctemperament and  circumstances\u201d (vii)\u00a0  Bloom\u2019s foreword, however, is devoted chiefly,  not to the <em>Anatomy<\/em>,  but to his own anxieties about Frye\u2019s  influence, presented in the  context of his well-known disquiet about  what he calls the School of  Resentment\u2013\u2013the various forms of \u201ccultural  criticism\u201d that take their  cues from identity politics.\u00a0 In the 1950s,  Bloom says, Frye provided an  alternative to the New Criticism,  especially Eliot\u2019s High Church  variety, but today he is powerless to  free us from the critical  wilderness.\u00a0 Because Frye saw literature as a  \u201cbenignly cooperative  enterprise,\u201d he is of little help with its  agonistic traditions.\u00a0 His  schematisms will fall away: what will remain  is the rhapsodic quality of  his criticism.\u00a0 In the extraordinary  proliferation of texts today,  according to Bloom, Frye will provide  \u201clittle comfort and assistance\u201d:  if he is to afford any sustenance, it  will be outside the universities.\u00a0  Still, Bloom believes that Frye\u2019s  criticism will survive not because of  the system outlined in the <em>Anatomy<\/em>,  but \u201cbecause it is serious,  spiritual, and comprehensive\u201d (xi).<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bob Denham&#8217;s talk to the Frye Festival in April 2007 has been added to the Festival Archive in the journal.\u00a0 It can be linked directly here.
