{"id":10135,"date":"2010-04-07T19:42:26","date_gmt":"2010-04-07T23:42:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=10135"},"modified":"2010-04-07T19:42:26","modified_gmt":"2010-04-07T23:42:26","slug":"michael-dolzani-desert-island-a-polemical-re-introduction-to-northrop-frye","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/04\/07\/michael-dolzani-desert-island-a-polemical-re-introduction-to-northrop-frye\/","title":{"rendered":"Michael Dolzani: &#8220;Desert Paradise: A Polemical Re-Introduction to Northrop Frye&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/EducatedImagination.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10136\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/EducatedImagination.jpg\" alt=\"EducatedImagination\" width=\"267\" height=\"356\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/EducatedImagination.jpg 334w, https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/EducatedImagination-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 267px) 100vw, 267px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>We&#8217;ve just added Michael Dolzani&#8217;s paper &#8220;Desert Paradise: A Polemical Re-Introduction to Northrop Frye&#8221; to the journal.\u00a0 You can link to it directly <a href=\"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/desert-paradise-a-polemical-re-introduction-to-northrop-frye\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A sample:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What are Frye\u2019s first principles?\u00a0 At what point does he begin\u2014for that  crucial point determines the focus and selectivity of all that follows.\u00a0  An entire mythology is often implicit in its Creation myth.\u00a0 The first  thing one notices about Frye is his preoccupation with patterns\u2014with  correspondences, codes, systems, structures, encyclopedic organizations,  vast and all-inclusive webworks.\u00a0 The titles of the two great works of  the first half of his career betoken this.\u00a0 <em>Fearful Symmetry<\/em> is  an apt title for a book about a poet who said, \u201cI must create a System,  or be enslaved by another man\u2019s.\u201d\u00a0 Frye was for a long time trying to  write two books at once, one about Blake\u2019s mythical and metaphorical  patterns and one about how Blake\u2019s patterns were a microcosm of the  patterns of the whole order of words.\u00a0 Eventually, this second book spun  off and became, first, <em>Structural Poetics<\/em>, and, finally, <em>Anatomy  of Criticism<\/em>\u2014the titular accent again being on the element of  pattern, as it is with <em>The Great Code<\/em> in the second half of  Frye\u2019s career.\u00a0 That book and its successor, <em>Words with Power<\/em>,  evolved directly from Frye\u2019s notebooks.\u00a0 Whatever their ultimate value,  the notebooks are a fascinating read; at times they seem to have been  written by the reincarnation of Pythagoras, as Frye launches into  flights of patternmaking dauntingly beyond anything in his published  books.\u00a0 We learn that his whole life\u2019s work was invisibly informed by an  eightfold pattern, the ogdoad, sometimes imagined as a series of eight  books with cryptic titles like Paradox and Ignoramus, and special  symbols to denote each title.\u00a0 As Robert Denham has shown, we learn of  repeated schemes to organize his material numerologically, according to  schemes of 7, 12, 14, 28, 78, 100, and so on.\u00a0 We learn that the Third  Book was to be an exposition of a diagram called the Great Doodle, a  mandala with symbolic names for its points and quadrants.\u00a0 And we find  repeated attempts to match the Great Doodle with patterns far beyond the  field of literature, such as the two traditional circular arrangements  of the trigrams of the <em>I Ching<\/em>.\u00a0 At some point, almost any  reader is going to scratch his head and ask, \u201cWhat is going on  here?\u201d\u2014all the more because of Frye\u2019s qualified but respectful treatment  of what he calls \u201ckook books,\u201d which we may define as books of  unbridled speculation about various symbolic patterns, for example <em>Holy  Blood, Holy Grail<\/em>, which Frye had read appreciatively long before  Dan Brown used it as a source for <em>The DaVinci Code<\/em>. We also  learn from the notebooks about certain revelations or epiphanies that  Frye experienced over the course of his life.\u00a0 In each case, he  describes these as epiphanies of pattern, of a sense of coherence, and  says that all of his writing was contained in microcosm in those few  moments of expanded consciousness.\u00a0 One came as a result of a late  night\u2019s reading of Spengler, an earlier influence than Blake.\u00a0 In  Spengler, any element of any human culture can be explained through its  belonging to a larger symbolic pattern.\u00a0 The insight that Blake\u2019s  patterns were the same patterns as those of the Bible, of all mythology,  and of all literature came to him as a late-night epiphany while trying  to write a graduate paper.\u00a0 In later years, there were other moments,  glancingly referred to by names like \u201cthe Seattle revelation.\u201d\u00a0 Nothing  would seem further from the perspective of post-structuralism, which had  to develop a whole new vocabulary of swear words adequate to curse any  attempt at \u201ctotalizing,\u201d \u201cmystification,\u201d or \u201chegemony.\u201d\u00a0 Nonetheless,  here we are, on the verge of celebrating a centenary for no more logical  reason than what Frye himself once called a superstitious reverence for  the decimal system of counting.\u00a0 On the grounds that this makes us  complicit, perhaps we should inquire into the reasons for Frye\u2019s own  superstitious reverence for patterns.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>While this is our first peer reviewed article in the journal, it is the twelfth paper we&#8217;ve added.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll also find &#8220;Articles of Interest&#8221; by Russell Perkin, Bob Denham, Peter Webb, and Johanne Aitken, as well as the &#8220;Frye Festival Archive&#8221; with talks by Alvin Lee, Bob Denham, Michael Dolzani, Jean O&#8217;Grady, and Germaine Warkentin.<\/p>\n<p>You can see it all <a href=\"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/articles\/\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We&#8217;ve just added Michael Dolzani&#8217;s paper &#8220;Desert Paradise: A Polemical Re-Introduction to Northrop Frye&#8221; to the journal.\u00a0 You can link to it directly here.
