{"id":10459,"date":"2010-04-15T00:05:05","date_gmt":"2010-04-15T04:05:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=10459"},"modified":"2010-04-15T00:05:05","modified_gmt":"2010-04-15T04:05:05","slug":"a-tale-of-two-conferences","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/04\/15\/a-tale-of-two-conferences\/","title":{"rendered":"A Tale of Two Conferences"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/ses1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10461\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/ses1.jpg\" alt=\"ses\" width=\"198\" height=\"333\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/ses1.jpg 283w, https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/ses1-178x300.jpg 178w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>I have just returned from two conferences: the American Comparative Literature Association and the North Eastern Modern Language Association.\u00a0 Six flights, ten days.<\/p>\n<p>My attendance at the NeMLA was limited because my flight out of Toronto was cancelled and I arrived a day late; just in time for my own panel, in fact.\u00a0 However, as I walked among the book stalls at the conference, I was very happy to stumble across <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Northrop-Frye-Selected-Letters-1934-1991\/dp\/0786443626\" target=\"_blank\">Robert Denham\u2019s edition of Northrop Frye\u2019s letters<\/a> front and centre at the McFarland Press table.\u00a0 When I wandered by later in the day, it was gone, sold out completely.\u00a0 So I made my way over to the Queen\u2019s-McGill University Press table to purchase <a href=\"http:\/\/mqup.mcgill.ca\/book.php?bookid=2436\" target=\"_blank\">J. Russell Perkin\u2019s <em>Theology and the Victorian Novel<\/em><\/a> \u2013 a really rather stunning book.<\/p>\n<p>At the American Comparative Literature Association\u2019s meeting \u2013 convened this year in New Orleans (&#8220;Nawlins,&#8221; if you\u2019re native) \u2013 I was part of a seminar discussing the romance.\u00a0 Unlike many similar settings, the ACLA meeting has excellent organization in that participants send abstracts to the seminar group which also meets each day of the conference.\u00a0 The result is real discussion on ideas being steadily accumulated by way of ongoing lectures and discussions.\u00a0 In our seminar group, at least half of the panellists quoted Frye directly, and Frye made his way into almost every discussion period precisely because the romance as a genre is not dying and neither are Frye\u2019s explorations, explications, and expectations of it.<\/p>\n<p>At the ACLA I was quite impressed to find people reading Frye\u2019s work on genre not with disdain but rather with a great deal of respect and curiosity.\u00a0 His work was applied from the romances of Virginia Woolf right through to Chick-Lit, and from the Anglo-American tradition all the way to Bollywood, Latin  America, and Africa.\u00a0\u00a0 If Frye is to have his much anticipated \u201cresurgence,\u201d it may well occur in the field of romance studies.\u00a0 Allow me to conclude by plugging an organisation where this seems most likely to happen, the International Association for the Study of Popular Romance: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.iaspr.org\/\">www.iaspr.org<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At any rate, both conferences re-affirmed and refreshed my own ideas about the romance and Northrop Frye\u2019s continuing influence on the field.\u00a0 I have four more conferences to prepare for in the next few months, including the annual meeting of the IASPR where Frye will undoubtedly be present.\u00a0 His work will certainly make a star turn in my talk on Stephenie Meyer\u2019s <em>Twilight<\/em> series.\u00a0 So, I look forward to continuing to discover Frye being read closely and carefully by my peers; and, additionally, to posting brief dispatches from these conferences.<\/p>\n<p>Hope to see you all again soon.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have just returned from two conferences: the American Comparative Literature Association and the North Eastern Modern Language Association.\u00a0 Six flights, ten days.
