{"id":10498,"date":"2010-04-17T15:19:18","date_gmt":"2010-04-17T19:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=10498"},"modified":"2010-04-17T15:19:18","modified_gmt":"2010-04-17T19:19:18","slug":"john-ford","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/04\/17\/john-ford\/","title":{"rendered":"John Ford"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/pity2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-10536\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/pity2.jpg\" alt=\"pity2\" width=\"247\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/pity2.jpg 411w, https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/pity2-190x300.jpg 190w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On this date playwright <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Ford_%28dramatist%29\" target=\"_blank\">John Ford<\/a> (1586 &#8211; 1640) was baptized.<\/p>\n<p>In Notebook 9 Frye makes some telling comparisons between Shakespeare and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/English_literature#Jacobean_literature\" target=\"_blank\">Jacobean playwrights<\/a>, particularly Ford, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Webster\" target=\"_blank\">Webster<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cyril_Tourneur\" target=\"_blank\">Tourneur<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Thomas_Dekker_%28poet%29\" target=\"_blank\">Dekker<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>As compared with his contemporaries, Shakespeare&#8217;s sense of tragedy is much more firmly rooted in <em>history<\/em>, and he lacks the moralizing tendency that makes Tourneur call his characters by such names as Lussurioso &amp; Ambitioso.\u00a0 Hence he does illustrate my point about tragedy being closer to a reality-principle than comedy.\u00a0 Outside him, I&#8217;m not sure that that&#8217;s true: there&#8217;s just as much fantasy &amp; manipulation in Tourneur or Ford as there is in Shakespearean romance.\u00a0 Shakespeare&#8217;s tragic vision also has something to do with his adherence to <em>popular<\/em> theatre: he has a <em>public<\/em> sense of dramatic action, not a ruminative psychologizing one&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>In Ford&#8217;s TPSW [<em>&#8216;Tis Pity She&#8217;s a Whore<\/em>] an amiable &amp; harmless old woman who has connived at the heroine&#8217;s incest first of all has her eyes put out, &amp; then, as an applauded act of justice, is led out to be burned at the stake.\u00a0 That really is brutality.\u00a0 And Hamlet&#8217;s excuse about Claudius&#8217; murder until he&#8217;s sure to go to hell is nothing compared to what the viallains in Tourneur &amp; Webster do.\u00a0 We expect a very high standard of sensitivity from Shakespeare, even the senstivity of readers who on the whole don&#8217;t live in tragic worlds.\u00a0 We understand, but don&#8217;t realize, Dekker&#8217;s remark: &#8220;There is a hell named in our creed, and a heaven, and the hell comes before; if we look not into the first, we shall never live in the last.&#8221;\u00a0 Several tragic dramatists, especially Webster, pick up M&#8217;s [Marlowe&#8217;s] remark in <em>Faustus&#8230;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>A manipulated tragic situation is often one where providence or Heaven or some power overreaching Nature takes a hand in the action, &amp; functions as the eiron.\u00a0 Many dramatists put up &#8220;Danger: God at Work&#8221; signs: there&#8217;s a good example in Ford&#8217;s TPSW [<em>&#8216;Tis Pity She&#8217;s a Whore<\/em>].\u00a0 (<em>CW<\/em> 20, 256-7)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A trailer for a recent San Fransisco production of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tis_Pity_She%27s_a_Whore\" target=\"_blank\"><em>&#8216;Tis Pity She&#8217;s a Whore<\/em><\/a> after the jump.<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=XWne8cEUhsg<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On this date playwright John Ford (1586 &#8211; 1640) was baptized.
