{"id":10751,"date":"2010-04-23T00:00:23","date_gmt":"2010-04-23T04:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=10751"},"modified":"2010-04-23T00:00:23","modified_gmt":"2010-04-23T04:00:23","slug":"william-shakespeare","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/04\/23\/william-shakespeare\/","title":{"rendered":"William Shakespeare"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/SANDERS2s.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-10752\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/SANDERS2s-230x300.jpg\" alt=\"SANDERS2s\" width=\"230\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/SANDERS2s-230x300.jpg 230w, https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/04\/SANDERS2s.jpg 384w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today is traditionally regarded as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/William_Shakespeare\" target=\"_blank\">Shakespeare<\/a>&#8216;s birthday (1564 -1616).<\/p>\n<p>Frye didn&#8217;t live to see the discovery of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.canadianshakespeares.ca\/multimedia\/imagegallery\/m_i_13.cfm\" target=\"_blank\">Sanders portrait<\/a>, above, but did mischievously observe of the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martin_Droeshout\" target=\"_blank\">Droeshout<\/a> engraving (by way of dismissing the significance of biography as any sort of key to interpretation) that it is the portrait of a man &#8220;who is clearly an idiot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Frye has so much to say about Shakespeare that just about any number of quotes would do here.\u00a0 I was lucky enough to be among the last generation of students to take Frye&#8217;s undergraduate Shakespeare course, and I remember very well the thrill it gave me to hear him say things like this:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In every play Shakespeare wrote, the hero or central character is the theatre itself.\u00a0 His characters are so vivid that we often think of them as detachable from the play, like real people.\u00a0 So such questions as, &#8220;is Falstaff really a coward?&#8221; have been discussed since the eighteenth century.\u00a0 But if we ask what Falstaff is, the answer is that he isn&#8217;t: he&#8217;s a character in a play, has no existence outside that play, and what is real about him is his function in the play.\u00a0 He has a variety of such functions &#8212; vice, braggart parasite, jester &#8212; and one of the things he has to do is certainly to behave at times like a stage coward.\u00a0 But Falstaff, like the actor who plays him, is only what he appears to be; and what he really really is, even if he could exist, wouldn&#8217;t exist.
