Lewis <\/a>in our day . . . are largely based on the formulas of the <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boy's_Own_Paper\" target=\"_blank\">Boy\u2019s Own Paper<\/a><em>\u201d\u00a0 (Northrop Frye,<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anatomy_of_Criticism#Second_essay_-_Ethical_Criticism:_Theory_of_Symbols\" target=\"_blank\">Anatomy of Criticism<em>, Second Essay<\/em><\/a>)\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>My reading was now mainly rubbish. . . .\u00a0 I read twaddling school-stories in<\/em> The Captain<em>\u201d\u00a0 (C.S. Lewis,<\/em> <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surprised_by_Joy\" target=\"_blank\">Surprised by Joy<\/a><em>, Chapter<\/em> 2)<\/p>\n<p>Northrop Frye attended C.S. Lewis\u2019s lectures during the time he spent in <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Merton_College,_Oxford\" target=\"_blank\">Oxford<\/a> in the late 1930s; much later he would recall Lewis as the only lecturer in Oxford worth listening to.\u00a0 The two men would not seem to have much in common: Lewis took a leading role in the revival of a consciously orthodox form of Christianity that is poles apart from Frye\u2019s visionary Blakean Protestantism.\u00a0 Nor does Frye seem to care for Lewis\u2019s fiction: in the diary for 1949 he expostulates against Charles Williams, noting that \u201cC.S. Lewis must be an influence too, &amp; a bad one\u201d (Feb. 26).\u00a0 The passage from the <em>Anatomy<\/em> quoted above, identifying the fiction of the Inklings with the formulas of the <em>Boy\u2019s Own Paper<\/em>, is hardly complimentary.\u00a0 But the lectures Frye heard at Oxford were later published as <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Discarded_Image\" target=\"_blank\">The Discarded Image<\/a><\/em>, a study of medieval cosmology that outlines a \u201cModel\u201d that persists until the end of the seventeenth century.\u00a0 The affinities with the cosmological schemes in Frye\u2019s work are readily apparent.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Recently I was struck by another passage in Lewis, this one in his 1955 autobiography <em>Surprised by Joy<\/em>.\u00a0 Lewis gives a fascinating account of his development as a reader, and in so doing he assumes something very like Frye\u2019s conception of all of literature comprising a single system, an idea that was most extensively formulated in the <em>Anatomy of Criticism<\/em> (1957).\u00a0 Lewis writes of his time at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Campbell_College\" target=\"_blank\">Campbell College<\/a> in Belfast:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Much the most important thing that happened to me at Campbell was that I there read <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=am2FfRwNg_gC&amp;dq=Sohrab+and+Rustum&amp;printsec=frontcover&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=evIJmRpZLq&amp;sig=dqE39GhcWee6a_mPClL9_0G2V18&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=bRKWSr6JJ4KSsgOu_vmkDA&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=3#v=onepage&amp;q=&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Sohrab and Rustum<\/em> <\/a>in form under an excellent master whom we called Octie.\u00a0 I loved the poem at first sight and have loved it ever since. . . .\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Matthew_Arnold\" target=\"_blank\">Arnold<\/a> gave me at once (and the best of Arnold gives me still) a sense, not indeed of passionless vision, but of a passionate, silent gazing at things a long way off.\u00a0 And here observe how literature actually works.\u00a0 Parrot critics say that <em>Sohrab<\/em> is a poem for classicists, to be enjoyed only by those who recognise the Homeric echoes.\u00a0 But I, in Octie\u2019s form room (and on Octie be peace) knew nothing of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Homer\" target=\"_blank\">Homer<\/a>.\u00a0 For me the relation between Arnold and Homer worked the other way; when I came, years later, to read the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iliad\" target=\"_blank\">Iliad<\/a><\/em> I liked it partly because it was for me reminiscent of <em>Sohrab<\/em>.\u00a0 Plainly, it does not matter at what point you first break into the system of European poetry.\u00a0 Only keep your ears open and your mouth shut and everything will lead you to everything else in the end.\u00a0 (Chapter 3)\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>There are also, of course, similarities with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tradition_and_the_Individual_Talent\" target=\"_blank\">T.S. Eliot\u2019s \u201cTradition and the Individual Talent.\u201d <\/a>For Eliot, \u201cthe whole of the literature of Europe from Homer . . . has a simultaneous existence and composes a simultaneous order.\u201d\u00a0 In the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anatomy_of_Criticism#Polemical_Introduction\" target=\"_blank\">Introduction to the <em>Anatomy<\/em><\/a>, Frye calls this passage from Eliot \u201cvery fundamental criticism.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 \u201c\u2026the sophisticated allegories of Charles Williams and C.S.
