{"id":13129,"date":"2010-07-13T00:00:21","date_gmt":"2010-07-13T04:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=13129"},"modified":"2010-07-13T00:00:21","modified_gmt":"2010-07-13T04:00:21","slug":"julius-caesar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/07\/13\/julius-caesar\/","title":{"rendered":"Julius Caesar"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9H-Kztt6WpM<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Beware the ides of March&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On this date <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julius_Caesar\" target=\"_blank\">Julius Caesar<\/a> was born (100 BCE &#8211; 44 BCE).\u00a0 That&#8217;s an historical fact.\u00a0 But history is not all that can be said about Caesar.<\/p>\n<p>Frye in &#8220;History and Myth in the Bible&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The ordinary notion of history and myth is that history really happened; myth is what didn&#8217;t happen, at least not in that form.\u00a0 The historian, we feel, tries to capture the past in the present: if he is writing about Julius Caesar&#8217;s assassination, he tries to show us what we might have seen if we had been present at the event.\u00a0 Truth, in this context, means truth of correspondence: a history, or structure of words, is aligned with a body of actions and is judged true if it is a satisfactory verbal replica of those actions.\u00a0 But truth of correspondence is not the concern of the literary critic: he deals entirely with verbal forms which are not primarily related to external facts or to propositions, and are never true in that context.\u00a0 To paraphrase Duke Theseus in Shakespeare, the poet, like the lover and the lawyer, is incapable of telling the truth by correspondence.\u00a0 So far as truth is involved in poetry, it is contained in the verbal form and provides no external criterion for it.\u00a0 (<em>CW <\/em>13, 17)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=9H-Kztt6WpM &#8220;Beware the ides of March&#8221; On this date Julius Caesar was born (100 BCE &#8211; 44 BCE).\u00a0 That&#8217;s an historical fact.\u00a0 But history is not all that can be said about Caesar.
