{"id":13801,"date":"2010-07-14T12:08:29","date_gmt":"2010-07-14T16:08:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=13801"},"modified":"2010-07-14T12:08:29","modified_gmt":"2010-07-14T16:08:29","slug":"centre-for-comparative-literature-a-personal-response","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/07\/14\/centre-for-comparative-literature-a-personal-response\/","title":{"rendered":"The Incomparable Centre for Comparative Literature"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/07\/frye84.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13804\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/07\/frye84.jpg\" alt=\"frye84\" width=\"342\" height=\"374\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/07\/frye84.jpg 428w, https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/07\/frye84-274x300.jpg 274w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Today is Frye&#8217;s birthday, and it has been just about two weeks since we heard the news that the Dean of Arts and Sciences, Meric Gertler, and the Strategic Planning Committee had recommended the closure of the Centre for Comparative Literature which Frye founded 40 years ago.\u00a0 The news was a complete shock.\u00a0 The director of the Centre, Neil ten Kortenaar, in his <a href=\"http:\/\/www.savecomplit.ca\/Letters\/Entries\/2010\/7\/12_Neil_ten_Kortenaar%2C_Director_of_the_Centre.html\" target=\"_blank\">letter<\/a> to the dean begins with this very admission:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>My initial shock at the news of the proposed disestablishment of the Centre for Comparative Literature has become absolute dismay as the meaning of this proposal has become clear to me.\u00a0 The news comes at a time when Comparative Literature at the University of Toronto was being thoroughly reinvigorated and we were looking forward with excitement to our future.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I can only agree with these sentiments.\u00a0 I was initially shocked by the recommendation and then slowly but surely began to realise the ramifications of such a decision.\u00a0 Ten Kortenaar cites a number of these in his letter.<\/p>\n<p>But, on a much more personal level, the type of research that I do simply cannot be done elsewhere.\u00a0 I chose to attend the University of Toronto, and more precisely the Centre for Comparative Literature, because of its connections to Northrop Frye.\u00a0 When I arrived at the University, I told the faculty of the Centre that my project would focus on Frye\u2019s influence, especially with respect to Harold Bloom.\u00a0 Indeed, in October, I submitted to the Centre a SSHRC proposal called, \u201cAnxieties of Criticism, Anatomies of Influence: A Study of Northrop Frye and Harold Bloom.\u201d\u00a0 In April, I found out that I had been awarded a SSHRC.\u00a0 Since then I have written an article with a very similar title that recently appeared in the <em>Canadian Review for Comparative Literature<\/em>. It may appear that I could have completed this research anywhere.\u00a0 But that is not the case, I very much needed the University of Toronto and the Centre for Comparative Literature because it provided the archives and the intellectual guidance of people like Linda Hutcheon, J.
