Merwin<\/a> in an interview published today in the <em>Daily Princetonian.<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Q: Can poetry be studied in college?<\/p>\n<p>A: I think it can be and  should be. The study shouldn\u2019t get in the way of the poetry. It\u2019s not  about interpretation. If you love it, you can talk for years about it.  If you don\u2019t love it, you\u2019ll kill it.<\/p>\n<p>I heard Northrop Frye lecture  on \u201cKing Lear\u201d at a convention. Frye talked about the importance of  feeling. One professor said to another, \u201cI taught \u2018King Lear\u2019 and never  felt anything. Is there a lack in me?\u201d The other professor said, \u201cYes,  there is a lack in you. You shouldn\u2019t be teaching it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moments of  feeling get more wonderful and more powerful all the time. If you\u2019re not  able to see them, you\u2019re not getting them.
