{"id":15176,"date":"2010-08-15T00:00:10","date_gmt":"2010-08-15T04:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=15176"},"modified":"2010-08-15T00:00:10","modified_gmt":"2010-08-15T04:00:10","slug":"macbeth-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/08\/15\/macbeth-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Macbeth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4LDdyafsR7g<\/p>\n<p><em>Ian McKellen as <\/em>Macbeth<em>: &#8220;Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow . . .&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p>August 15th offers two significant and uncannily symmetrical <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Macbeth_of_Scotland\" target=\"_blank\">Macbeth<\/a> anniversaries.<\/p>\n<p>On this date in 1040, Macbeth saw his cousin and rival, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duncan_I_of_Scotland\" target=\"_blank\">Duncan 1<\/a>, killed in battle, making Macbeth King of Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Seventeen years later to the day, in 1057, Macbeth himself was killed in battle by a force led my Duncan&#8217;s eldest son,<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malcolm_III_of_Scotland\" target=\"_blank\"> Malcolm III of Scotland.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frye on Shakespeare&#8217;s <em>Macbeth<\/em> as one of the &#8220;tragedies of order&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In each of Shakespeare&#8217;s three social tragedies, <em>Julius Caesar<\/em>, <em>Macbeth, <\/em>and <em>Hamlet<\/em>, we have a tragic action based on three main character groups.\u00a0 First is the order-figure: Julius Caesar in that play; Duncan in <em>Macbeth<\/em>; Hamlet&#8217;s father.\u00a0 He is killed by a rebel-figure or usurper: Brutus and the other conspirators; Macbeth; Claudius.\u00a0 Third comes the nemesis-figure or nemesis-group: Antony and Octavius; Malcolm and Macduff; Hamlet.\u00a0 It is sometimes assumed tht the hero, the character of the title-role, is always at the centre of the play, and that all plays are to be related in the same way as the hero; but each of the heroes of these three tragedies belongs to a different aspect of the total action.\u00a0 The nemesis-figure is partly a revenger and partly an avenger.\u00a0 He is primarily obsessed with killing the rebel-figure, but has a secondary function of restoring something of the previous order.\u00a0 (<em>Fools of Time<\/em>, 17)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=4LDdyafsR7g Ian McKellen as Macbeth: &#8220;Tomorrow and tomorrow and tomorrow . . .&#8221; August 15th offers two significant and uncannily symmetrical Macbeth anniversaries.
