{"id":17771,"date":"2010-10-22T00:09:40","date_gmt":"2010-10-22T04:09:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=17771"},"modified":"2010-10-22T00:09:40","modified_gmt":"2010-10-22T04:09:40","slug":"jean-paul-sartre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/10\/22\/jean-paul-sartre\/","title":{"rendered":"Jean-Paul Sartre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5lFLO16TRPQ&amp;feature=related<\/p>\n<p><em>A Sartre and de B<\/em>eauvoir <em>screener from the 1950s.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On this date in 1964 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Paul_Sartre\" target=\"_blank\">Jean-Paul Sartre<\/a> was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature, which he refused.<\/p>\n<p>Frye in notebook 12 offers a qualified estimation of Sartre as the last of the &#8220;great thinkers&#8221; (elsewhere he calls him &#8220;an intellectual juvenile delinquent&#8221;):<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I had the usual childish fantasies, when very young, of wanting to be a &#8220;great man&#8221; &#8212; fantasies that in our day only Churchill had realized.\u00a0 But Churchill&#8217;s greatness was archaic: his funeral really buried that whole conception of greatness as a goal of ambition.\u00a0 Then I had fantasies of wanting to be a great composer &amp; a great novelist&#8211;both obsolete conceptions today.\u00a0 The novel is breaking up into other forms &amp; is no longer central as it was in the 19th c: the great composers ended with Bartok, and Boulez &amp; Varese &amp; Cage are not &#8220;great composers,&#8221; they&#8217;re something else.\u00a0 When I settled into my real line I naturally wanted to be &#8220;great&#8221; there too: but maybe greatness is obsolete.\u00a0 In the 19th century one wants to read Hegel &amp; Marx &amp; Kierkegaard &amp; Nietzsche; are there really any 20th c. equivalents of that kind of &#8220;great thinker&#8221;?\u00a0 Maybe Sartre.\u00a0 But something about greatness <em>ended<\/em> around 1940.\u00a0 We&#8217;re doing different things now.\u00a0 Marshall McLuhan is a typical example: a reputation as a great thinker that doesn&#8217;t think at all.\u00a0 (<em>CW 9, 146)<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=5lFLO16TRPQ&amp;feature=related A Sartre and de Beauvoir screener from the 1950s.
