{"id":18676,"date":"2010-11-15T18:32:39","date_gmt":"2010-11-15T23:32:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=18676"},"modified":"2010-11-15T18:32:39","modified_gmt":"2010-11-15T23:32:39","slug":"quote-of-the-day-nobody-to-blame-except-everybody","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/11\/15\/quote-of-the-day-nobody-to-blame-except-everybody\/","title":{"rendered":"Quote of the Day: &#8220;Nobody to blame, except everybody&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/11\/norrie.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18678\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/11\/norrie.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"170\" height=\"175\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Thinking about the <a href=\"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/2010\/11\/14\/a-radical-reinterpretation-of-the-entire-science-of-economics\/\" target=\"_blank\">recent horrors<\/a> of runaway <em>laissez-faire<\/em> capitalism and what its alternative might be has brought me around to this entry in one of Frye&#8217;s &#8220;Third Book&#8221; notebooks:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Elie Wiesel, <em>Legends for our Time<\/em>.\u00a0 The last chapter, &#8220;A Plea for the Dead,&#8221; describes how nobody made any real fuss when six million Jews were murdered in Germany.\u00a0 Nobody to blame, except everybody.\u00a0 This is the kind of thing that makes it impossible for me to be a Buddhist, to accept ignorance and enlightenment as <em>ultimate<\/em> categories.\u00a0 The terrible burden of guilt simply has to be accepted: we can&#8217;t cast it off even on Christ.<\/p>\n<p>What we can <em>do <\/em>about it involves organization &#8212; <em>moral<\/em> organization.\u00a0 Communism cannot produce this: it&#8217;s only the other side of capitalism, and accepts all its economic-man stereotypes.\u00a0 Teaching people one by one to be more sympathetic is futile.\u00a0 Western organization is the key, though no Western society has it.\u00a0 Our fumblings for &#8220;participatory democracy&#8221; really have as their goal a society in which one almighty yell can go up, almost automatically, when East Pakistan or black Rhodesia or whatever gets out of line with our moral sense.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t really lack moral feelings; what we lack is a social structure in which to embody them.\u00a0 (<em>CW<\/em> 9, 321)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In the absence of such a moral social structure we get the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/magazine\/archive\/2010\/06\/my-country-tis-of-me\/8088\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tea Party<\/a>, which is itself a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/politics\/news\/17390\/210904\" target=\"_blank\"> creation <\/a>and a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2010\/08\/30\/100830fa_fact_mayer\" target=\"_blank\"> tool<\/a> of a deeply entrenched and self-serving oligarchy.\u00a0 (That is, the top 1% of the population that owns 38% of the wealth and takes in 25% of the income &#8212; and still demands tax cuts.)<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thinking about the recent horrors of runaway laissez-faire capitalism and what its alternative might be has brought me around to this entry in one of Frye&#8217;s &#8220;Third Book&#8221; notebooks: Elie Wiesel, Legends for our Time.\u00a0 The last chapter, &#8220;A Plea for the Dead,&#8221; describes how nobody made any real fuss when six million Jews were [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[42,129,148],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-18676","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-economics","category-quote-of-the-day","category-society"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
