\n<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n

Northrop Frye at Bowles Lunch<\/em><\/div>\n

“I have had sudden visions.”
\nBloor Street, Toronto, 1934<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

3 a.m. in the all-night diner, dizzy
\nwith Benzedrine and lack of sleep, old books<\/p>\n

and papers scattered across the table.
\nWith his pen, his Dickensian spectacles,<\/p>\n

his pounding, driving Bourgeois intellect<\/em>,
\nhe charges into a poem by William Blake<\/p>\n

with two facts and a thesis<\/em>, cuts Milton<\/em>
\nopen on the table like a murdered corpse<\/p>\n

and spins it like a teetotum<\/em> until
\nhe’s put each sentence through its purgatory<\/p>\n

and made the poet bless him with a sign:
\nthus (though perhaps one can picture this<\/p>\n

only from a point outside of time)
\nhe sees the shattered universe around him<\/p>\n

explode in reverse, and make the flying
