{"id":18965,"date":"2010-11-29T00:12:18","date_gmt":"2010-11-29T05:12:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=18965"},"modified":"2010-11-29T00:12:18","modified_gmt":"2010-11-29T05:12:18","slug":"huxley-and-orwell-dystopia-vs-dystopia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/11\/29\/huxley-and-orwell-dystopia-vs-dystopia\/","title":{"rendered":"Huxley and Orwell: Two Varieties of Dystopia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/11\/Amusing-Ourselves-to-Death1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-18967\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/11\/Amusing-Ourselves-to-Death1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"418\" height=\"3297\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Frye in &#8220;Varieties of Literary Utopia&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A certain amont of claustrophobia enters this argument when it is realized, as it is from about 1850 on, that technology tends to unify the whole world.\u00a0 The conception of an <em>isolated <\/em>Utopia like that of More or Plato or Bacon gradually evaporates in the face of this fact.\u00a0 Out of this situation come two kinds of Utopian romance: the straight Utopia, which visualizes a world state assumed to be ideal, at least in comparison with what we have, and the Utopian satire or parody, which presents the same kind of social goal in terms of slavery, tyranny, or anarchy.\u00a0 Examples of the former in the literature in the last century include Bellamy&#8217;s <em>Looking Backward<\/em>, Morris&#8217;s <em>News from Nowhere<\/em>, and H.G. Wells&#8217;s <em>A Modern Utopia<\/em>.
