{"id":19079,"date":"2010-12-08T00:11:23","date_gmt":"2010-12-08T05:11:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=19079"},"modified":"2010-12-08T00:11:23","modified_gmt":"2010-12-08T05:11:23","slug":"john-lennon-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/12\/08\/john-lennon-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Northrop Frye and John Lennon: &#8220;War is Over &#8212; If You Want It&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=01ZT1h-RzKc<\/p>\n<p>Today is the thirtieth anniversary of John Lennon&#8217;s death (1940-1980).<\/p>\n<p>It is a pleasure to commemorate him with local talent &#8212; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.koripop.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kori Pop <\/a>performing &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Being_for_the_Benefit_of_Mr._Kite!\" target=\"_blank\">Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite<\/a>,&#8221; filmed just over a week ago by <a href=\"http:\/\/vimeo.com\/mitchfillion\" target=\"_blank\">Mitch Fillion<\/a> of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.southernsouls.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\">Southern Souls<\/a>.\u00a0 This is a sneaks-up-beside-you rendition of the song in a simply conceived but beautiful video.<\/p>\n<p>In &#8220;The Quality of Life in the &#8217;70s,&#8221; Frye picks up on Lennon&#8217;s theme, &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/War_is_over_if_you_want_it\" target=\"_blank\">War is over &#8212; if you want it<\/a>,&#8221; a phrase that appeared on billboards during the Christmas season forty years ago in cities all over the world, including Toronto:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>One of the more genuinely attractive aspects of the protest movements of the late 1960s has been the insistence with which they have raised the question of &#8220;Why not?&#8221;\u00a0 Some time ago one of the Beatles put up advertisements over Toronto saying &#8220;War is over&#8211;if you want it.&#8221;\u00a0 It was not perhaps a very successful enterprise, but what it said was true enough.\u00a0 War is over if we want it, and so is the whole nightmare of human folly and tyranny.\u00a0 It will probably not be over in the 1970s, but there is nothing in the will of God, the malice of the devil, or the unconsciousness of nature to prevent it from going.\u00a0 What prevents it are the bogies and demons inside us.\u00a0 We have been calling these demons up pretty frequently during the past few years of confused and infantile illusions, and they have never failed to respond to our call.\u00a0 But they have no power except what they get from us, and certainly no power to stop us, if we want it, from making the 1970s an era of grace, dignity, and peace.\u00a0 (CW 11, 296)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The footnote to this paragraph in the <em>Collected Works<\/em> reads:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>NF is referring to John Lennon&#8217;s Christmas 1970 release <em>Happy Christmas (War is Over)<\/em>.\u00a0 Lennon himself paid for a billboard on Yonge St. that proclaimed this message to the citizens of Toronto.\u00a0 (CW 11, 376)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Video for &#8220;Happy Christmas (War is Over)&#8221; after the jump.\u00a0 Also, the remix by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Martin\" target=\"_blank\">George Martin<\/a> of &#8220;Being for the Benefit of Mr. Kite,&#8221; interpolating &#8220;I Want You (She&#8217;s So Heavy)&#8221; and &#8220;Helter Skelter.&#8221;\u00a0 Really needs to be heard to be appreciated.\u00a0 Finally, a photo of Lennon with the 19th century circus poster that inspired the song.\u00a0 Lennon claimed the entire thing came from that poster.\u00a0 In any event, if you look hard enough Pablo Fanques and the Hendersons will all be there.\u00a0 (While, of course, Henry the Horse dances the waltz.)<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=hb2YSAVHmIE<\/p>\n<p><em>&#8220;Happy Christmas (War is Over)<\/em><\/p>\n<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IG2zgWdYgCY<\/p>\n<p><em>George Martin remix of &#8220;Being For the Benefit of Mr. Kite&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/mrkite2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19274\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/mrkite2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"614\" height=\"557\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/mrkite2.jpg 614w, https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/mrkite2-300x272.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 614px) 100vw, 614px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=01ZT1h-RzKc Today is the thirtieth anniversary of John Lennon&#8217;s death (1940-1980).
