These two views are the aesthetic and the creative, the Aristotelian and the Longinian, the view of literature as product and the view of literature as process.\u201d\u2014Frye, <em>Anatomy of Criticism<\/em>, p. 66.<\/p>\n<p>Frye probably borrowed the terms &#8220;product and process&#8221; from the writings of Alfred North Whitehead, while his opposition of Aristotle and Longinus may remind some readers of this blog of a similar opposition by R.A. Habib, which I reprinted in <a href=\"http:\/\/arche-arc.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/sphere-of-longinus.html\">The Sphere of <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/arche-arc.blogspot.com\/2010\/09\/sphere-of-longinus.html\">Longinus<\/a>. I frankly don\u2019t like Frye&#8217;s terms \u201caesthetic\u201d and \u201ccreative,\u201d which Frye himself doesn\u2019t use often, either in the <em>Anatomy<\/em> or elsewhere. I much prefer the opposition he makes in another essay, <a href=\"http:\/\/arche-arc.blogspot.com\/2009\/06\/poetry-in-motion-part-3.html\">quoted here<\/a>, between a story\u2019s \u201cnarrative values\u201d and its \u201csignificant values.\u201d In contradistinction to what Frye writes in this section of the <em>Anatomy<\/em>, I would say that while I agree that Aristotle is indeed more aligned to the view of literature as product, this goes hand-in-hand with a tendency to see literature as a means of transmitting \u201csignificant values.\u201d Thus literature is just one step up from rhetoric, in that its purpose is to convey those values through a fictional fa\u00e7ade, much as Freud would\u2019ve believed that a dream\u2019s purpose was to convey the psychological truths of sexual repression. In contrast, though Longinus wasn\u2019t without his own concern for \u201csignificant values,\u201d on the whole he seems more concerned with pure \u201cnarrative values\u201d when he speaks of how poetry\u2019s effects bring forth the internal ecstasy he calls \u201cthe sublime.\u201d This in turn squares up with Jung\u2019s tendency to value dream-fantasies for their own communicative power, not as representations of something else.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Image from Neil Gaiman&#8217;sSandman 15 Gene Phillips of The Archetypal Archive has a post up today, &#8220;The Empiricist of Dreams,&#8221; that makes extensive reference to Frye.
