{"id":19125,"date":"2010-12-09T00:00:59","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T05:00:59","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=19125"},"modified":"2010-12-09T00:00:59","modified_gmt":"2010-12-09T05:00:59","slug":"edith-sitwell","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/12\/09\/edith-sitwell\/","title":{"rendered":"Edith Sitwell and &#8220;Fearful Symmetry&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/edithsitwell460.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19135\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/edithsitwell460.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"368\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/edithsitwell460.jpg 460w, https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/edithsitwell460-300x244.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 368px) 100vw, 368px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On this date in 1964<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edith_Sitwell\" target=\"_blank\"> Edith Sitwell<\/a> died (born 1887).<\/p>\n<p>Sitwell provided an enthusiastic review of <em>Fearful Symmetry <\/em>in the <em>Spectator <\/em>(10 March 1947) where she observed: &#8220;To say it is a  magnificent, extraordinary book is to praise it as it should be praised,  but in doing so one gives little idea of the huge scope of the book and its fiery understanding.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s Frye in his letter of thanks to Sitwell on January 7, 1948:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Dear Miss Sitwell:<\/p>\n<p>Ever since I read your review of <em>Fearful Symmetry<\/em> in the Spectator I have been wanting to write you and wondering what to say.\u00a0 I have finally decided that the best thing to say is thank you.\u00a0 (Denham, <em>Selected Letters<\/em>, 24-5)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After the jump, a much longer letter to Sitwell written on April 12th of that same year.\u00a0 Headnote and footnotes courtesy of Bob Denham.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Here\u2019s a letter from Frye to Edith Sitwell from 12 April 1948, in reply to her having sent him a copy of her <\/em>The Shadow of Cain<\/strong><strong><em>.\u00a0 Earlier in the year he had written Sitwell a note thanking her for her review of <\/em>Fearful Symmetry<em>.\u00a0 Sitwell\u2019s long reply to the letter that follows has been published in <\/em>Selected Letters of Edith Sitwell<em>, ed. Richard Greene (London: Virago Books, 1997), 294.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dear Miss Sitwell:<\/p>\n<p>Thank you very much for <em>The Shadow of Cain<\/em>, a very lovely, haunting, and almost unbelievably suggestive poem.\u00a0 The apparently effortless way in which a contemporary situation expands, by way of certain human archetypes, into its ultimate values of primeval cold and unquenchable life, makes the poem a kind of miniature epic.<a href=\"#_edn1\">[1]<\/a> I know by this time what to look for in major poetry, and I always find it.\u00a0 Reversing the axiom, when I find what satisfies me in a poem I know that it is major, and <em>The Shadow of Cain<\/em> belongs to the restricted canon of major poetry.\u00a0 The close connection between your mind and Blake\u2019s, which has become so striking in recent years, is an additional and personal reason for my liking it, not because I want all poetry to be \u201cBlakean,\u201d but because you are one of the few poets who confirm the authenticity of the experience I went through in submitting myself to Blake\u2019s influence.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you very much too for your letter and its warm appreciation of my book.\u00a0 I am glad to hear what is slowly being confirmed by personal letters that it is gradually finding its way to the people for whom it is intended.\u00a0 I know Messrs. Tchelitchew and Bowra only by reputation, but that is considerable enough to make me pleased with the success I have had in helping modern readers to know Blake.\u00a0 I have written my publisher about having the book published in England, but he says that the shortage of paper in England makes it inadvisable, and that the best thing to do is to sustain pressure on Oxford, who distribute the book in England, to keep advertising it until the ban is lifted.\u00a0 Meanwhile, of course, copies can be ordered from Princeton.\u00a0 That\u2019s the official communique: actually, I don\u2019t think any pressure is being put on Oxford or that Oxford is responding if it is.\u00a0 However, that\u2019s his decision.\u00a0 I\u2019m sorry the book should be short when you and Mr. Keynes and the T.L.S. reviewer have been so good to it,<a href=\"#_edn2\">[2]<\/a> and I can only hope that eventually the people who want it will get it.\u00a0 I am much obliged to you for the name of your agent, which will sooner or later be of great help to me.<\/p>\n<p>I am pleased to see in a publisher\u2019s announcement you are editing a selection of Blake for the Chiltern Library, which is building up one of the best reprint collections available.<a href=\"#_edn3\">[3]<\/a> Your remarks about Blake (e.g. in <em>The Pleasures of Poetry<\/em>) constitute a part of my own enlightenment on that subject, and I am eager to see more of them.<\/p>\n<p>The academic term here, with the registration three times what it was two years ago, and which has kept me effectively snowed under all winter, is gradually relaxing, and I am looking round for more jobs to do.\u00a0 I want to move back into the sixteenth century and write about <em>The Faeries Queene<\/em> and Shakespeare\u2019s comedies and Rabelais.\u00a0 Once a critic learns his job, criticism ought to come very easily, for if he is writing about a greater man than himself (the normal procedure), he has that man\u2019s power available and ready to be tapped, if he will only realize that it is greater, and puncture the hole in the dam of his own ego.\u00a0 The arrogance and self\u2011sufficiency I find in so much contemporary criticism, especially in America, bewilders me, as it seems to make things needlessly difficult.\u00a0 Once again, thanks very much for your kindness to me, which, coming as it does from a famous poet to an unknown critic, has given me an idea of what is meant by the phrase \u201crepublic of letters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sincerely,<\/p>\n<p><em>Northrop Frye.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong> <\/strong><\/p>\n<hr size=\"1\" \/><a href=\"#_ednref1\">[1]<\/a> Frye had written a brief review of <em>The Shadow of Cain<\/em> in the<em> Canadian Forum<\/em>, 27 (January 1948): 238,<em> <\/em>remarking that Sitwell \u201cis now a major poet, a necessary part of one\u2019s literary education and current reading alike, and this poem is a beautiful and erudite proof of the fact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref2\">[2]<\/a> Frye is referring to three reviews of <em>Fearful Symmetry<\/em> that had appeared in England: Sitwell\u2019s own review: \u201cWilliam Blake,\u201d <em>Spectator<\/em> 10 (October 1947): 466; Geoffrey Keynes, \u201cThe Poetic Vision,\u201d <em>Time and Tide<\/em> 28 (27 December 1947): 1394; and \u201cElucidation of Blake\u201d by an anonymous reviewer in <em>TLS<\/em>, 10 January 1948: 25.\u00a0 Frye wrote to Sitwell on 7 January 1948, saying, in toto, \u201cEvery since I read your review of <em>Fearful Symmetry<\/em> in the<em> Spectator<\/em> I have been wanting to write to you and wondering what to say.\u00a0 I have finally decided that the best thing to say is thank you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"#_ednref3\">[3]<\/a> No records exist for a selection of Blake\u2019s poems edited by Sitwell and published by John Lehman in the Chiltern Library series.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On this date in 1964 Edith Sitwell died (born 1887).
