{"id":19296,"date":"2010-12-09T10:00:29","date_gmt":"2010-12-09T15:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=19296"},"modified":"2010-12-09T10:00:29","modified_gmt":"2010-12-09T15:00:29","slug":"previously-unpublished-rewriting-fearful-symmetry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/12\/09\/previously-unpublished-rewriting-fearful-symmetry\/","title":{"rendered":"Previously Unpublished Correspondence: Rewriting \u201cFearful Symmetry\u201d"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/fearfulsymmetry.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19297\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/fearfulsymmetry.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/fearfulsymmetry.jpg 319w, https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2010\/12\/fearfulsymmetry-191x300.jpg 191w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 191px) 100vw, 191px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>The praise and international recognition that <\/strong><\/em><strong>Fearful Symmetry<em> brought Frye did not come easily. <\/em><\/strong><em><strong>Frye told David Cayley that the book<\/strong><\/em><em><strong> went through \u201cfive complete rewritings of which the third and fourth were half again as long as the published book\u201d (CW 24, 924). \u00a0He reported the same thing in interviews with Art Cuthbert, Valerie Schatzker, and Andrew Kaufman (ibid. 413, 595, 671).\u00a0 Then there was the major rewriting called for by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carlos_Baker\" target=\"_blank\">Carlos Baker<\/a>, one of the readers for Princeton University Press.\u00a0 Part of Baker\u2019s report on Frye\u2019s 658\u2011page manuscript can be found in Ian Singer\u2019s introduction to the <\/strong><\/em><strong>Collected Works<\/strong><em><strong> edition of<\/strong><\/em><strong> Fearful Symmetry<\/strong><em><strong> (CW 24, xxxv).\u00a0 Other parts are recorded by John Ayre (<\/strong><\/em><strong>Northrop Frye: A Biography<\/strong><em><strong> (192\u20133), who has a full account of Baker\u2019s judgments about the strengths and weaknesses of the book.\u00a0 Frye\u2019s response to Princeton was to undertake another rewriting.\u00a0 Once he had completed this large task, Baker reread the report and sent the memorandum below to Datus C. Smith, Jr., the director of Princeton University Press<\/strong>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>PRINCETON UNIVERSITY<\/p>\n<p>Inter\u2011Office Correspondence<\/p>\n<p>Department of English<\/p>\n<p>To: Datus C. Smith, Jr.<\/p>\n<p>From: Carlos Baker<\/p>\n<p>Subject: MS. of Frye\u2019s Book on Blake<\/p>\n<p>September 10, 1945.<\/p>\n<p>I have reread this MS. with particular interest and care in order to discover just how complete the revision was.\u00a0 I find that he has done the job with great attention and thoroughness.<\/p>\n<p>1)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The length is lessened by about 20% with, I should say, a 20% gain in intensity and interest.<\/p>\n<p>2)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He has either eliminated or completely reworked all the allusions to other major poems than those of Blake about which I originally felt quarrelsome.\u00a0 What is left seems to me right and just, and his method of handling these matters at the heads of chapters seems to me preferable to the method I suggested: viz. separating them off into one section of the book by themselves.<\/p>\n<p>3)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 He has been liberal and helpful in inserting signposts of the reader\u2019s self\u2011orientation.\u00a0 But nota bene: if you decide to print the book, you ought still to insist on a prefatory page where the Blakean canon is listed.\u00a0 Or this could appear as a one\u2011page appendix.<\/p>\n<p>4)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 In short the book is now definitely publishable, is the best book of Blake that I know, and I should describe it as brilliant, sensitive, witty, and eminently original.\u00a0 It should do much to make better known and more respected a poet who might have been more so at an earlier date but for a series of accidents of which he himself was one of the most conspicuous.<\/p>\n<p>5)\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 With carefully chosen and strategically placed reproductions of Blake\u2019s own pictures, it should make a handsome book.\u00a0 Both because of the size of the Blake cult and the originality of these utterances, the book might create something of a stir, especially in Academia but also outside.<\/p>\n<p>I find in the revision a crack not there before, anent Blake\u2019s use of Rahab, the Apocalyptic Whore of Babylon.\u00a0 Says Frye slyly: The Joyce of <em>Finnegans Wake<\/em> might have referred to her as The Last Strumpet or The Great Whorn.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The praise and international recognition that Fearful Symmetry brought Frye did not come easily.
