{"id":20493,"date":"2011-02-02T00:02:02","date_gmt":"2011-02-02T05:02:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=20493"},"modified":"2011-02-02T00:02:02","modified_gmt":"2011-02-02T05:02:02","slug":"groundhog-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2011\/02\/02\/groundhog-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Groundhog Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=CUWhN6j7OS4&amp;feature=related<\/p>\n<p><em>Phil Connors begins to rescue himself from an eternity of Groundhog Days by reading books and learning to play the piano<br \/>\n<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Groundhog_Day\" target=\"_blank\">Groundhog Day<\/a>, which, thanks to the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Groundhog_Day_%28film%29\" target=\"_blank\">1993 movie<\/a>, now has an association with the nightmare of eternal recurrence.<\/p>\n<p>Frye on progressive repetition in &#8220;The Quality of Life in the 70s&#8221;:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I said before that the question of what is news raises another question: what is it that really happens?\u00a0 I said too that most of our lives is spent in repetition and routine, the world of non-news.\u00a0 But there are two kinds of repetition.\u00a0 There is the repetition of ordinary habit, three meals a day, going to the job, driving the car, and all the continuous activities that preserve our sense of identity.\u00a0 There is also the repetition of practice, as when we learn to play the piano or memorize the alphabet or the multiplication table.\u00a0 This is directed and progressive repetition, and it si the basis of all education.\u00a0 The ability to think is just as much a matter of habit and practice as the ability to play the piano.\u00a0 Whenever anything that we see, or pick up in conversation, or get as an idea, is added to and becomes a part of an expanding body of experience, we are continuing our education.\u00a0 In that sense we may say that nothing is really happening in the world except the education of the people in it. . .
