This reminds me that someone (and I would love to know whom: I\u2019ve never been able to find the reference again) once pointed out, unkindly but with at least some justification, that Bloom\u2019s famous \u201canxiety of influence\u201d was really just a reworking of Eliot\u2019s \u201cTradition and the Individual Talent\u201d! <\/a>Interesting in view of Bloom\u2019s hostility to Eliot.<\/p>\n

In partial defence of Bloom, in response to both Bob\u2019s and Joe\u2019s thoroughly reasonable comments, he has modelled himself on the \u201cdivine Oscar\u201d with some success. (I know this is not a popular view. I never get very far defending him to most of my colleagues and friends!) And for me, in spite of its obscurities and exaggerations, The Anxiety of Infuence<\/a><\/em> remains one of the indispensable critical books of the second half of the twentieth century.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
