(These essays on \u201cUniversity Subjects\u201d are not very well known; they are not included in the recent Yale University Press edition of The <em>Idea<\/em>. ) Newman wrote:\u00a0 \u201cI repeat, then, whatever we be able or unable to effect in the great problem which lies before us, any how we cannot undo the past. English Literature will ever <em>have been<\/em> Protestant.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>Newman, one of the Victorian sages Russell Perkin alludes to in an<a href=\"https:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/wp-admin\/post.php?action=edit&amp;post=1763\" target=\"_blank\"> earlier post<\/a>, is discussed in Frye&#8217;s essay &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=OKyS-EFjS9QC&amp;pg=PP1&amp;dq=Northrop+Frye%27s+Writings+on+the+Eighteenth+and+Nineteenth+Centuries#v=onepage&amp;q=&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">The Problem of Spiritual Authority in the Nineteenth Century<\/a>,&#8221; along with Carlyle, Mill, and Arnold.
