Yes, it is a possible explanation for my \u201csurprise<\/a>\u201d that Frye read the Joseph story more realistically than\u00a0usual. I cannot actually supply hard textual proofs that he also had in mind something similar to Luther\u2019s allegorical-theological interpretation but that would certainly account for his reservations.<\/p>\n

As to Thomas Mann, the notebook entry I quoted continues with a reference to him (which does not answer your question, though): \u201cI\u2019ve encountered several times the assertion that he\u2019s a type of Christ; but what\u2019s really Christlike about him? I\u2019ve investigated Mann, but without result. The one thing that interests me is that he descends to Egypt and becomes, not the Pharaoh or temporal ruler, but his adviser, a Castiglione<\/a> courtier.
