mid-thirties, socialism (or communism) was St. George and fascism was the dragon; today, capitalism democracies are St. George and communism is the dragon.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Similar whirligig in Hegelian and Marxist notions of conflict: Hegel = conflict of ideas leading to ultimate goal of freedom; Marx = class conflict and struggle over means of production.\u00a0 Today, Hegelian thrust for freedom being revived.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 Cyclical rhythm of history produces different myths of freedom, but these are secondary myths or ideologies that don\u2019t result in genuine freedom, which comes from primary, not secondary concern.<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0 Primitive &amp; Mature Societies:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Primary concerns = food, sex, property, freedom; secondary concerns = political &amp; religious ideologies.\u00a0 Western democracies have been better at fulfilling the needs that spring from primary concerns, but McCarthyism, American imperialism, etc. show that <em>something is still needed<\/em>, something beyond the material: the spiritual.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 The difference between the spiritual aspect of primary concerns and ideology or secondary concerns can be seen in the difference between primitive &amp; mature societies:<\/p>\n<p>a.\u00a0 Primitive societies: hierarchical; individual subordinated to the group<\/p>\n<p>b.\u00a0 Mature societies: group functions to create genuine individuality (an \u201cindividualized society\u201d); mature societies contain spiritual people: <em>soma pneumatikon<\/em> (spiritual body), rather than <em>soma psychikon<\/em> (natural body)<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0 The Crisis in Language: the difference between ideological &amp; spiritual concern is a difference in language<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 Descriptive or demonic literalism: descriptive accuracy, logical argument, ideological, creedal dogma<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Imaginative literalism: counter-historical, counter-logical language of myth, metaphor, paradox, interpenetrative, open, kerygmatic vision.\u00a0 Imaginative literalism is a <em>key point in Frye<\/em>.\u00a0 For whatever else it is, the New Testament is written in literary language.\u00a0 \u201cThe literary language of the New Testament is not intended, like literature itself, simply to suspend judgment, but to convey a vision of spiritual life that continues to transform and expand our own.\u00a0 That is, its myths become, as purely literary myths cannot, myths to live by; its metaphors become, as purely literary metaphors cannot, metaphors to live in\u201d (17-18).\u00a0 Kerygma or proclamation.<\/p>\n<p><em>Key concept<\/em>: interpenetration: here (p. 18) defined as \u201cthe free flowing of spiritual life into and out of one another that communicates but never violates.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 See also the beginning of chapter 3, where Frye, drawing on Whitehead, sees interpenetration as \u201cspiritual vision.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The language of spirit is the language of love.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>II.\u00a0 The Double Vision of Nature<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0 Natural &amp; Human Societies: double vision is, first, the distinction between the natural &amp; human environments; our end is to transform the natural environment into a human one (garden &amp; city)<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0 Criticism &amp; Civilization: making a human world of nature requires work &amp; play; the latter provides freedom for producing the creative arts; what\u2019s needed in addition to work-energy are leisure, contemplation, &amp; critical evaluation; these produce a humanized view of nature, &amp; the only reason for wanting to live in such a world is love.<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0 The Redemption of Nature: to redeem nature is to restore the lost paradise = the vision of the ideal.\u00a0 Hegel\u2019s role in this: substance as spirit.\u00a0 The birth of consciousness to self-awareness to absolute knowledge, where we break out of the mirror prison of Narcissus (subject contemplating object).\u00a0 \u201cTruth is beauty only if the spiritual is substantial [real].\u201d\u00a0 The truth of imaginative structures:\u00a0 this is where criticism (education) enters.\u00a0 [Hegel\u2019s <em>Phenomenology of Spirit<\/em> is a key text for Frye\u2019s later writings.\u00a0 Frye sees in Hegel, as he sees in Blake, someone who is striving to do away with the subject-object split.]<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>III.\u00a0 The Double Vision of Time<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0 Space &amp; Time: The natural context.\u00a0 Life: a revolt of finite vs. the indefinite.\u00a0 One aspect of this is ritual, crucial points in the cyclical pattern.\u00a0 From ritual, drama, where the structural principle is the parabola, where time is metaphorically some form of the horizontal line.\u00a0 In religion, there\u2019s a vertical dimension as well.\u00a0 Christianity = total vision takes the shape of a cross.<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0 Time &amp; History: The social context.\u00a0 Contract views of Burke and Hobbes: continuum with the past that sets up vertical authority.\u00a0 Marxism &amp; Nietzsche: vertical dimension disappears.\u00a0 Biblical view: past &amp; future are part of present.\u00a0 Primitive view: archetypal myths reenacted:\u00a0 fixation on past = Quixote; fixation on future = Marx<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0 Time &amp; Education: Repetition in human experience that progresses produces enlargement of freedom (piano-playing example).\u00a0 The vertical dimension is inspiration or enlightenment.\u00a0 The current desire for a genuine revolution that renews the cycle of time.\u00a0 Christianity of the age of the Spirit (Joachim of Floris).<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>IV.\u00a0 The Double Vision of God<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>A.\u00a0 Gods and God: A short history of gods.\u00a0 Two foci in non-biblical religion.\u00a0 (1)\u00a0 Nature as impersonal structure of law &amp; order.\u00a0 (2) Ruler vested with supreme authority (symbolically divine).\u00a0 In literature, gods modulate into human heroes (the displacement principle).<\/p>\n<p>B.\u00a0 Hebraic and Hellenic Traditions.\u00a0 Christianity:\u00a0 two directions.\u00a0 Back to the Old Testament (integrity of the Bible) and forward to Hellenic reason.\u00a0 The latter has produced benefits, but the emphasis has been wrong, leading to Thomist systems (Catholic), the quest for the historical Jesus (Protestant), etc.\u00a0 Paul didn\u2019t write an epistle to the Athenians.<\/p>\n<p>C.\u00a0 Metaphoric Literalism: Gospels can be read on the literal-descriptive level as a work of literature and on the level of spiritual vision; one can look at them as aesthetic productions, or as spiritual batteries for charging one\u2019s spiritual energies.\u00a0 That\u2019s the double vision.<\/p>\n<p>D.\u00a0 The Humanized God.\u00a0\u00a0 Old Testament God is essentially not a perfect being at all bit an intensely humanized figure like Lear: a god of capers (trickster god).<\/p>\n<p>Levels of reading the Bible:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 metaphorical-literal: miraculous events:\u00a0 Vindication of Elijah on Mt. Carmel before the priests of Baal.\u00a0 Story shows intimacy between God and man.\u00a0 It\u2019s an incredible story, but its haunting power is connected with occasions when wrong kind of help has let us down and authentic kind breaks through.\u00a0 Still, at this level, stories are stories.\u00a0 But beyond this, stories to live by.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 allegorical level: story means something expressed in discursive language.\u00a0 Paul reads the story of Abraham\u2019s two wives as an allegory in Galatians.\u00a0 Paul\u2019s reading is curious, especially from a Jewish perspective.\u00a0 An advance is needed, such as \u201cFreedom is in the orbit of God\u2019s will and bondage outside it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 moral or tropological:\u00a0 As in the parables.\u00a0 Here we begin to move from single to spiritual vision.<\/p>\n<p>All stories in Bible exhibit three levels of demonic parody, redemptive power, and apocalyptic vision.\u00a0 Purgatorial virtues: faith and hope.\u00a0 Paradisal vision of love.<\/p>\n<p>The reality of God comes closer to human life when purified of the reflection of human evil.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For students and aficionados alike, a point-by-point outline of The Double Vision.
