That\u2019s what\u2019s so important about the humanities in the uni\u00adversity; there is always something of Mark Hopkins and the log. There\u2019s something of a personal dialogue between one human being and another. And the fact that this dialogue is being car\u00adried out in the teeth of all the mass emotion techniques of the electronic media is a very important side of the humanities.\u201d<\/em> \u2013\u2013Northrop Frye<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>A great deal of imaginative and intellectual energy was generated by the two recent conferences on Frye, honoring the centenary of his birth\u2013\u2013one in Budapest and the other in Toronto.\u00a0 Our weblog, \u201cThe Educated Imagination,\u201d allows us to continue the dialogues begun at those two gatherings.<\/p>\n<p>The aims of the blog are<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to stimulate and foster interest in Frye\u2019s work<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to facilitate the conversation about his criticism<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to provide useful research tools for all who want to study his writings<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to keep the bibliography of Frye studies up to date, becoming a steward of the history and tradition of such studies<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to testify to the ways that Frye\u2019s thought has influenced our thinking, understanding, and teaching<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to explain things in Frye\u2019s work that may be difficult, to analyze the various parts of his conceptual universe, and to evaluate and critique his theories<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to understand the sources of Frye\u2019s thought and the influences that shaped it<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to see how Frye\u2019s criticism interpenetrates with or otherwise relates to the conceptual universes of other systems of thought<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to study how Frye\u2019s criticism has been applied practically, both in literary studies and in other disciplines<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to understand how Frye\u2019s work fits into the history of criticism<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to examine Frye\u2019s place in Canadian culture<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to pose questions about Frye\u2019s work that others may be able to answer<\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to develop the fledgling journal\u2013\u2013go<a href=\"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/articles\/\"> here<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u25cf to publicize and review books and articles about Frye<\/p>\n<p>The blog, which, as you can see, is fully searchable, enables one to comment on earlier postings, and it has a \u201clibrary\u201d that has begun to accumulate materials, including articles on Frye\u2019s work, several ebooks, pdf files of the <em>Northrop Frye Newsletter<\/em>, previously unpublished material, selected reviews of some of Frye\u2019s books, student notes from Frye\u2019s courses, and the like.<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this letter is to invite you and your friends and colleagues to become a part of the conversation.\u00a0 You may want to respond to earlier postings by using the \u201ccomment\u201d feature of the blog.\u00a0 Beyond that, feel free to send Joe Adamson (<a href=\"mailto:adamsonj@mcmaster.ca\">adamsonj@mcmaster.ca<\/a>) your articles, comments, queries, suggestions, and \/ or earlier things you\u2019ve written about Frye.\u00a0 By so doing you will circulate your ideas among the more than 11,000 visitors who log on to the blog each month.\u00a0 If you would like to become a regular blogger, posting every week or even once a month, please let Joe know.\u00a0 As Frye says, the techniques of the electronic media certainly have their down side.\u00a0 But they can also help bring us together by engaging in dialogue about a common subject.<\/p>\n<p>Joe Adamson and Bob Denham<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;I think that everybody tries to produce what Marshall McLuhan called a \u2018counter environment.\u2019 That is, you set yourself in opposition to the kind of mass tendencies which the media set up.
