{"id":30777,"date":"2012-11-18T20:07:40","date_gmt":"2012-11-19T01:07:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=30777"},"modified":"2012-11-18T20:07:40","modified_gmt":"2012-11-19T01:07:40","slug":"house-of-cards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2012\/11\/18\/house-of-cards\/","title":{"rendered":"House of Cards"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/2012\/11\/18\/house-of-cards\/houseofcards\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-30779\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-30779\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2012\/11\/houseofcards.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"183\" height=\"275\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Jeffery Donaldson has given us permission to publish this lovely poem:<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>House of Cards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>Jeffery Donaldson<\/em><\/p>\n<p>For Garry Sherbert<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAh, that fine fragile cathedral,\u201d<\/p>\n<p>said Jacques Derrida of Northrop Frye\u2019s<\/p>\n<p><em>Anatomy<\/em>, one evening he was asked,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>and there implied that, sooner or later,<\/p>\n<p>literature\u2019s whole top-heavy elaborate estate,<\/p>\n<p>its fictive papers gingerly assembled,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>would come crashing down on itself,<\/p>\n<p>your canny devotions notwithstanding.<\/p>\n<p>Said Frye himself: <em>the world we create<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>in our imaginations is above time;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>when the whole structure is finished,<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>nature, its scaffolding, is knocked away&#8230;.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For Monsieur, you have fiction\u2019s ephemera,<\/p>\n<p>the broad-footed obelisk\u2019s weightless<\/p>\n<p>undergirdings, giddy and unhinged.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>For the Canuck, <em>nature <\/em>is the provisional<\/p>\n<p>gizmo, down and out, all gauze and gimcrack,<\/p>\n<p>a mustered rigging\u2019s trial-and-error.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Something between them will have to give.<\/p>\n<p>Look this way and let us watch a moment<\/p>\n<p>this child at work on a house of cards,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>her painstaking piecemeal agglomerations,<\/p>\n<p>rows of card-pair tee-pees\u2019 touching tips<\/p>\n<p>rising pyramidal, fine-flicked and unquibbling,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>frangible as Tiffany. Her gangly,<\/p>\n<p>jeweller\u2019s-eye-tuned hand at widdershins<\/p>\n<p>and dodging round buttresses athwart<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>must have a knack for stealth, that furtive<\/p>\n<p>gesture, nearly, of not putting a thing<\/p>\n<p>where you leave it, lifting your fingers free.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The testy habiliments climb to a single point,<\/p>\n<p>light headed, slackening upwards,<\/p>\n<p>all the more shouldering less and less,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>next to nothing in the end. Fixed on little<\/p>\n<p>more than the touchy gossamer integra,<\/p>\n<p>she knows its equilibrium is a travesty,<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>how far from sound-footed, how possessed<\/p>\n<p>of no greater poise than that each<\/p>\n<p>tipped buttress is already half-toppled.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>And she knows how we wait for hubris<\/p>\n<p>to come knocking the moment she gingers<\/p>\n<p>a last card onto the ticklish pinnacle.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Her staying it was never in the cards,<\/p>\n<p>we like to say. The rooms are empty.<\/p>\n<p>Once the whole is done, she\u2019ll need to wreck it.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>How that last one didn\u2019t trigger the upset<\/p>\n<p>let-down already settled upon, who knows?<\/p>\n<p>Her patience is dizzying.
