<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacques_Derrida\" target=\"_blank\">Derrida<\/a> died a month later.\u00a0 I was duly\u00a0trained to think about literature <em>critically, <\/em>which is to say <em>theoretically<\/em>.\u00a0 My immediate reaction to Frye when I first encountered him\u00a0was that literary archetype is both universal and\u00a0essential,\u00a0but I knew\u00a0also these are\u00a0notions\u00a0that cannot be accepted: theory had told me so.\u00a0 Eventually, as is to be expected, I began to turn the tables on theory when it\u00a0became apparent to me\u00a0that\u00a0I could apply theory to any\u00a0book and somehow make it work \u2013 there was always a subtext\u00a0of some sort\u00a0that could be exploited for some theoretical purpose.\u00a0 Frustration ensued.\u00a0 How was I to study literature if it is just a game in theory application?\u00a0 One day a professor\u00a0said to\u00a0me: read this book and come back in a week.\u00a0 The book, of course, was <em>Anatomy of Criticism<\/em>.\u00a0 My copy of the <em>Anatomy <\/em>now sits in pieces, the\u00a0spine broken,\u00a0the margins marked up.\u00a0 (My\u00a0edition includes\u00a0Harold Bloom\u2019s preface. \u00a0The next book I read was <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Anxiety_of_Influence\" target=\"_blank\">The Anxiety of Influence<\/a><\/em>.)<\/p>\n<p>A few months after first reading the <em>Anatomy<\/em>, I delivered a paper on Frye at a graduate conference on Canadian Studies.\u00a0 During the \u201cquestion\u201d period which quickly became a \u201cstatement\u201d period, I was summarily dismissed as a \u201cNorthrop Frye Apologist.\u201d\u00a0 Indeed, my naivete was so profound\u00a0that I\u00a0did not realize there is such contempt for Frye in the academy, let alone that Frye requires an apology at a Canadian Studies conference.\u00a0 But, as <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Linda_Hutcheon\" target=\"_blank\">Linda Hutcheon<\/a> notes in her introduction to <em><a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=xjfxrXtk-2oC&amp;pg=PP1&amp;dq=northrop+frye+the+bush+garden#v=onepage&amp;q=&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\">The Bush Garden<\/a><\/em>, \u201cPredictably (this <em>is <\/em>Canada), Frye\u2019s particular conception came under fire \u2013 from the very start\u201d (vii).\u00a0 Hutcheon is right about <em>The Bush Garden<\/em>, but her estimation seems to extend to most if not all\u00a0of Frye&#8217;s writings.\u00a0 It was in that very moment I decided that Frye would be an area of study for me.\u00a0 Since then, I have purchased or been given every single volume of <em>The Collected Works of Northrop Frye<\/em> (except\u00a0one) and have read through many of them,\u00a0most particularly\u00a0the introductions to each volume.<\/p>\n<p>Finding Frye in 2006\u00a0was\u00a0very different from finding Frye in the early 1960s, as\u00a0was the case\u00a0for Robert\u00a0Denham.\u00a0 When I found Frye (or, as it now seems,\u00a0Frye found me), the permanence of theory did not seem quite so permanent.\u00a0 Frye, in most instances, is now covered in survey courses of literary theory.\u00a0 I did not live through the denunciation of Frye or the distancing from Frye of the last quarter of the 20th century.\u00a0 But, then again,\u00a0the salad days of high theory seem to be waning.\u00a0 The theory wars are in recession.\u00a0 Does this mean that studying Frye in the\u00a021st century is without challenges?\u00a0 Not likely.\u00a0 The literary academic establishment\u00a0is still fundamentally\u00a0pre-occupied with theoretical concerns, and Frye is apparently\u00a0not theoretical enough to be\u00a0designated &#8220;Theory.&#8221;\u00a0 Likewise, writing, as I do,\u00a0about Frye in the\u00a0context of Comparative Literature (the House of High Theory) provides other challenges.\u00a0 Even so, studying Frye in\u00a0such an\u00a0environment is exciting precisely because reading\u00a0him \u201cfifty years after\u201d provides its own idiosyncratic surprises, challenges and questions,\u00a0not to mention\u00a0persistent doubts.\u00a0 So is the goal of the Frye scholar today one of reclaiming Frye, apologizing for Frye, or simply\u00a0finding\u00a0him all over again?<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Robert Denham in his article, \u201c\u2018Pity the Northrop Frye Scholar\u2019?
