Eliot has . . . said, the poet is not likely to know what is to be done unless he lives in what is not merely the present, but the present moment of the past, unless he conscious, not of what is dead, but of what is already living.\u201d\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI sometimes think with Oscar Wilde that lying, the telling of beautiful untrue things, is the proper aim of art.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Do these two passages have a faint Frygian ring to them?\u00a0 They are from <em>Anatomy of Criticism<\/em>.\u00a0 Not Frye\u2019s <em>Anatomy<\/em> but <em>The Anatomy of Criticism <\/em>\u00a0by <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Henry_Hazlitt\" target=\"_blank\">Henry Hazlitt<\/a>, pp. 155 and 239.<\/p>\n<p>While on the topic\u2013\u2013In 1982 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wayne_Booth\" target=\"_blank\">Wayne Booth<\/a> wrote to Frye to apologize for listing <em>Anatomy of Criticism<\/em> as <em>The Anatomy of Criticism<\/em> in the bibliography of <em>The Rhetoric of Fiction<\/em>, saying that it would be corrected in the next edition.\u00a0 Frye replied: \u201cWell, I don\u2019t suppose it did any harm to either book to have mine listed as \u201c<em>The<\/em>\u201d <em>Anatomy<\/em> for a brief time.\u00a0 Most people when speaking to me about it say \u2018your Anatomy,\u2019 which is much more disconcerting.\u00a0 In the meantime, I am very pleased that \u2018The\u2019 <em>Rhetoric of Fiction<\/em> continues to do so well.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u201cThe present cannot really be known or understood except through the past.\u00a0 It follows inescapably that the more we know of the past the more we know of the present.\u00a0 As T.S.
