{"id":3991,"date":"2009-10-14T13:43:38","date_gmt":"2009-10-14T17:43:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=3991"},"modified":"2009-10-14T13:43:38","modified_gmt":"2009-10-14T17:43:38","slug":"frye-and-martin-amis","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2009\/10\/14\/frye-and-martin-amis\/","title":{"rendered":"Frye and Martin Amis"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-3993\" src=\"http:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2009\/10\/rachel.jpg\" alt=\"rachel\" width=\"244\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2009\/10\/rachel.jpg 305w, https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2009\/10\/rachel-192x300.jpg 192w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 244px) 100vw, 244px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s really interesting to read in <a href=\"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/2009\/10\/14\/12-march-1974-northrop-frye-looks-to-the-twenty-first-century\/\" target=\"_blank\">Russell&#8217;s earlier post<\/a> that Martin Amis considered attending U of T in 1971 to study with Frye before publishing his first breakout novel, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Rachel_Papers_%28novel%29\" target=\"_blank\">The Rachel Papers<\/a><\/em>, in which Frye plays an integral part in the protagonist Charles Highway&#8217;s intellectual development.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a very long time since I&#8217;ve read the novel, but if I remember correctly, Highway must read Frye more or less under the covers, in secret: it is completely symptomatic of a time when Frye had somehow become anathema to the British idea of literary scholarship.\u00a0 I know I&#8217;m a partisan, but I&#8217;d still say that in the long run, the British lost out in the bargain.\u00a0 When the Franco-American poststructuralist tide was rising in the 1980s, the English school had very little to fight back with on literature&#8217;s behalf, and the lingering <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/F._R._Leavis\" target=\"_blank\">Leavisites<\/a> certainly weren&#8217;t going to get the job done.<\/p>\n<p>Frye also appears regularly in Amis&#8217;s critical writings, and is part and parcel with the contrarian badboy outlook that continues to carry him as both an author and a critic.\u00a0 (One of his best observations is that a literary critic&#8217;s most essential attribute is a spine: something to tingle when tingling is the required response.)\u00a0 Anyone interested in getting a sense of\u00a0Frye&#8217;s influence on\u00a0Amis should check out his excellent collection of articles and reviews, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_War_Against_Clich%C3%A9\" target=\"_blank\">The War Against Cliche<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It&#8217;s really interesting to read in Russell&#8217;s earlier post that Martin Amis considered attending U of T in 1971 to study with Frye before publishing his first breakout novel, The Rachel Papers, in which Frye plays an integral part in the protagonist Charles Highway&#8217;s intellectual development.\u00a0 It&#8217;s been a very long time since I&#8217;ve read [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":20,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[26,92],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3991","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-correspondence","category-literary-criticism"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
