For the present, a few random comments: I enjoyed and largely agree with the assessment of \u201cthe brilliant, the wrong, and the batty.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eve_Kosofsky_Sedgwick\" target=\"_blank\">Eve Sedgwick<\/a> is undoubtedly important, but her prose is off-putting: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Susan_Gubar\" target=\"_blank\">Susan Gubar<\/a> noted in a review of <em>Epistemology of the Closet<\/em> that she turns English into a foreign language with her critical jargon, arcane vocabulary, and elaborate qualifications.\u00a0As for\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.michaelberube.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Berube\u2019s blog<\/a>, having gone through quite a few posts at random, he seems to have missed his true calling as a political commentator. Though I agree that he is a good writer, as well as something of a satirist. I also see he is a candidate for the MLA presidency.<\/p>\n<p>Regarding the Cornel West quotation, with its reference to <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zora_Neale_Hurston\" target=\"_blank\">Zora Neale Hurston\u2019s <\/a>Republican affiliation: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Dos_Passos\" target=\"_blank\">John Dos Passos<\/a> is another example of an American writer with a problematically complex political identity, beginning as a radical leftist, and moving to support of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Barry_Goldwater\" target=\"_blank\">Barry Goldwater<\/a> and writing for the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Review\" target=\"_blank\">National Review<\/a><\/em>. The case has been made that underlying the shift of allegiance was a commitment to the individual and to ideas of liberty and democracy; on the other hand, few people seem to read the later works of Dos Passos (and I am not among them, and so cannot comment personally on them). Perhaps there\u2019s somewhat of a parallel with Wordsworth \u2013 in relation to whom T. S. Eliot wrote (with some self-reference?) \u201cwhen a man takes politics and social affairs seriously the difference between revolution and reaction may be by the breadth of a hair, and \u2026 Wordsworth may possibly have been no renegade but a man who thought, so far as he thought at all, for himself.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>\u00a0 Responding to Michael Sinding&#8217;s post: There are\u00a0many points that one could engage with in Michael Sinding\u2019s post; I plan to come back to some of them in relation to Michael Happy\u2019s response.
