I was by no means trying to give a full account of Frye\u2019s reading of the Bible. My remarks were in the context of the earlier posts about the meaning of the phrase \u201cliterary criticism of the Bible.\u201d All I was trying to suggest was that Frye\u2019s approach relies on two fundamental literary principles, myth and metaphor or narrative and image\u2013\u2013the mythos and dianoia that Frye devoted so much space to in <em>Anatomy of Criticism<\/em>. Typology and prophecy, as I understand those terms, are terms from biblical, rather than literary, criticism. I agree also that \u201cvision\u201d is also absolutely central to Frye\u2019s enterprise, and I wrote a fairly long chapter in my book on Frye and religion (89\u2013125) trying to make a case for its centrality and relating it to terms such as \u201cinsight,\u201d \u201cenlightenment,\u201d \u201cepiphany,\u201d \u201crecognition\u201d and (the central visionary faculty) \u201cthe imagination.\u201d But again \u201cvision\u201d is a term that does not spring from the vocabulary of literary criticism, though it is perhaps obliquely connected to Aristotle\u2019s opsis. No one would want to reduce Frye\u2019s reading of the Bible to myth and metaphor. But they are literary principles, and so no one would want to ignore them either.
