[Canadian Pacific Railway] train to St. John that goes across Maine, so he says he\u2019ll have a chance to piss on the United States.\u00a0 Just the same Barker has been deeply hurt by his exclusion.\u00a0 I wish the Americans didn\u2019t do all the silly things the Communists expect them to do and know in advance how to take advantage of.\u201d\u00a0 (9 April 1950)<\/p>\n<p>The lectures that Fairley was to give at Bryn Mawr were later published as <a href=\"http:\/\/books.google.ca\/books?id=CEocfbvIMMMC&amp;pg=PA338&amp;lpg=PA338&amp;dq=Goethe%E2%80%99s+Faust:+Six+Essays+barker+fairley&amp;source=bl&amp;ots=Jv-XQX8xYg&amp;sig=BP_I2_T0G43sHAo-idJGfHejQNQ&amp;hl=en&amp;ei=AT-oS7GQDsWVtgfB7rGKAQ&amp;sa=X&amp;oi=book_result&amp;ct=result&amp;resnum=8&amp;ved=0CCEQ6AEwBw#v=onepage&amp;q=Goethe%E2%80%99s%20Faust%3A%20Six%20Essays%20barker%20fairley&amp;f=false\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Goethe\u2019s Faust: Six Essays<\/em> <\/a>(Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1953).\u00a0 Fairley incidentally painted Frye\u2019s portrait in 1969, which is reproduced above.<\/p>\n<p>About his subject, Fairley has this to say:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I first ran into the name of Northrop Frye when, returning to Canada in 1936, I read an article by him in <em>The Canadian Forum <\/em>about that delightful dance troupe \u201cThe Ballet Joos.\u201d\u00a0 They acted, or rather danced, scenes from social life.\u00a0 I remember particularly \u201cThe City,\u201d which conveyed both gregariousness and loneliness and gave me a pleasure greater than any I got from classical dancing.\u00a0 Does he remember this too with the same vivid pleasure, I wonder?<\/p>\n<p>He now switches my mind back to the University of Toronto as it was then.\u00a0 It seemed to me in those days that University College with its undenomina\u00adtional freedom was carrying the torch of the humanities ahead of the other colleges.\u00a0 This was a pardonable illusion, which any of the four colleges was entitled to.\u00a0 But what with Northrop Frye and his mastery of the whole field of literature as we know it and his colleague, Kathleen Coburn, with her com\u00admand of the Coleridge battalion \u2014 to say nothing of her very special autobiog\u00adraphy <em>In Pursuit of Coleridge \u2014 <\/em>it appears now that I was wrong and that Victoria is in the lead as taking the University\u2019s name more effectively abroad than I ever expected.<\/p>\n<p>My portrait of Northrop Frye is a third attempt after two ignominious failures.\u00a0 I was with Aba Bayefsky the first time.\u00a0 He succeeded \u2014 more than succeeded \u2014 and I collapsed.\u00a0 After a second collapse I said, \u201cNorrie, let me try again.\u201d\u00a0 He agreed.\u00a0 And sure enough, that inscrutable face of his yielded at last, and his gentle nature came through to my great delight.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>From Barker Fairley: Portraits (Toronto: Methuen, 1981): 48\u20139 Further on Barker Fairley and the refusal of U.S. customs to grant him a visa to lecture on Goethe at Bryn Mawr because of his leftist sympathies (he had supported a Soviet friendship organization), these passages from Frye\u2019s Diaries: \u201cPoor old Barker still feels pretty blue: he [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":24,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":"","_links_to":"","_links_to_target":""},"categories":[16,39,98],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-9569","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-bob-denham","category-diaries","category-memoir"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v27.2 -
