The pictorial tendency, often with a dance basis, is so persistent it should be worked out in some detail&#8230; The French are not a rhythmically moving race &#8212; a Celtic-Latin alloy&#8230; The highlights of a musical history would probably be <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fran%C3%A7ois_Couperin\" target=\"_blank\">Couperin<\/a>&#8211;<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean-Philippe_Rameau\" target=\"_blank\">Rameau<\/a> fanciful titles, with some of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wanda_Landowska\" target=\"_blank\">Landowska<\/a>&#8216;s notes (lunatic but interesting). The attack on opera centring on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christoph_Willibald_Gluck\" target=\"_blank\">Gluck<\/a> and the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tannh%C3%A4user_%28opera%29\" target=\"_blank\">Tannhauser<\/a> fights the impossibility of producing music while pretending to be a Roman (Revolution: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luigi_Cherubini\" target=\"_blank\">Cherubini<\/a> &amp; Napolean were both Italians): the 19th c. partition into the Provencal, and Belgian and a Pole (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Frank_Martin_%28composer%29\" target=\"_blank\">Frank<\/a> is purely Teutonic and <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fr%C3%A9d%C3%A9ric_Chopin\" target=\"_blank\">Chopin<\/a>&#8216;s music is entirely pictorial.\u00a0 His non-committal titles are a pose: one doesn&#8217;t expect any other music to follow his Preludes. There&#8217;s a closer link between Chopin and Debussy than one would at first think): the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opera_bouffe\" target=\"_blank\">opera bouffe<\/a> <\/em>parodies of the <em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Faust_%28opera%29\" target=\"_blank\">Faust<\/a> <\/em>type: revival of the Rameau tradition with Debussy &amp; <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ravel\" target=\"_blank\">Ravel<\/a>: <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Camille_Saint-Sa%C3%ABns\" target=\"_blank\">Saint-Saen<\/a>&#8216;s last-war journal.\u00a0 Do the French hate music? Why is there no lust of the flesh &amp; pride of the eyes in it? no <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Renoir\" target=\"_blank\">Renoir<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jean_Boucher_%28artist%29\" target=\"_blank\">Boucher<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victor_Hugo\" target=\"_blank\">Hugo<\/a> even? I&#8217;m getting cultural dysentery again.\u00a0 Hangnail is an incorrect form of angnail, a clear sense of false etymology.
