{"id":9650,"date":"2010-03-26T12:48:47","date_gmt":"2010-03-26T16:48:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/fryeblog.blog.lib.mcmaster.ca\/?p=9650"},"modified":"2010-03-26T12:48:47","modified_gmt":"2010-03-26T16:48:47","slug":"beethoven","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/macblog.mcmaster.ca\/fryeblog\/2010\/03\/26\/beethoven\/","title":{"rendered":"Beethoven"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>httpv:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=TauWURuddFI<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Piano_Sonata_No._29_%28Beethoven%29\" target=\"_blank\">Sonata no. 29<\/a> (&#8220;Hammerklavier&#8221;), Largo e Allegro Risoluto.\u00a0 Alfred Brendel, piano.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>On this date in 1827 <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ludwig_van_Beethoven\" target=\"_blank\">Beethoven<\/a> died.<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s the 19 year old Frye on Beethoven:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Beethoven\u2019s attack on the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sonata_form\" target=\"_blank\">sonata form<\/a> is more subtle [than Wagner].\u00a0 Broadly speaking, it centres around the pictorial approach, and, hence, the compression and economy of the Mozartian sonata disappears, and the sonata takes on a greatly enlarged aspect.\u00a0 The speed no longer swings about a balance, but the various movements (Beethoven expanded the three\u2011movement form to a four\u2011movement one) are rhythmically contrasted.\u00a0 The middle theme of Mozart is expanded to a tremendous development section*a purely pictorial idea which analyses every implication of the given themes and holds them up to the light, as it were.\u00a0 A similar impulse leads Beethoven to develop the coda.\u00a0 The egocentricity of his later forms is, if often exaggerated, nonetheless present, and it can hardly be altogether an accident that the greatest of romantic musicians became deaf in his later years, whereby the individual concentration power would be so much augmented.\u00a0 There is in Beethoven, however, a good deal of the will\u2011to\u2011power spirit as well.\u00a0 In his later works he is no longer content merely with a spatial attack on the sonata form; he must probe deeper and analyse the fundamental secrets of the time\u2011problems in his art form.\u00a0 In consequence, the two works of his last period which are on perhaps the largest scale deal first of all with an exhaustive and distinctly pessimistic and despairing analysis of the sonata form, ending in a slow movement, and followed by a terrific burst of energy which tears to pieces, in the one case the fugue, in the other the oratorio.\u00a0 The two works in question are <em>Hammerclavier Sonata<\/em>, op. 106, and the <em>Choral Symphony<\/em>.
