H. Abrams<\/a>. As Abrams reviewed Frye\u2019s \u201cAnatomy,\u201d it is possible that Pynchon picked up the idea of the genre from that class. Hollander reported the course with Abrams in \u201cPynchon Notes,\u201d and suggested the connection with Menippean Satire at a recent conference. He doesn\u2019t give the year in which Pynchon took the course, but says Pynchon graduated from Cornell in 1959.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>The term Menippean satire does not occur in Pynchon\u2019s writings. But as Hollander\u2019s note shows, Pynchon wrote a paper (which Abrams later quoted to students) comparing <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Candide\" target=\"_blank\">Voltaire\u2019s \u201cCandide\u201d<\/a> with Samuel <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_History_of_Rasselas,_Prince_of_Abissinia\" target=\"_blank\">Johnson\u2019s \u201cRasselas.\u201d<\/a> Both of those books are (or can be seen as, if you\u2019re fussy) Menippean satire, and that might have led Abrams to talk about the genre.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAbrams Remembers Pynchon.\u201d <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ham.muohio.edu\/~krafftjm\/pynchon.html\" target=\"_blank\">Pynchon Notes<\/a> 36-39 (1995-1996): 179-80.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A note from Michael Sinding: Regarding Pynchon and Menippean Satire: Charles Hollander notes that at Cornell, Pynchon also took a course with M.
