This is the elusive photo of Frye wearing a clown nose at a party for Morley Callaghan. That’s Morley’s son Barry Callaghan standing next to him. The photo (along with Frye’s blurb) appears on the back cover of Barry’s Fifteen Years in Exile, his memoir about his years at the Exile Quarterly. The very pleasant circumstances in which the photo was taken are described in this post from last year.
Ha! You say “the” photo. The photo I recall is a different one. A clown-nosed Frye seated a banquet table, turning toward the camera.
Sigh. Yes, Bob, that is probably true — if you read Barry Callaghan’s account in of the occasion in Bob Denham’s earler post, you’ll see that it does suggest a number of photos might have been taken. It’s possible my mind is playing tricks on me, but I was an undergrad at Victoria College at the time, and I swear I remember a photo published in the Globe and Mail with a number of people standing shoulder to shoulder, all wearing clown noses — including then-Premier of Ontario, David Peterson and Alice Munro.
